Widyastuti. K2206039: Improving Students’ Speaking Skill Through
Storytelling (A Classroom Action Research at the Twelfth Grade of SMAN 5
Surakarta in Academic Year 2009/2010). Teacher Training and Education
Faculty, Sebelas Maret University, Surakarta 2010.
This study is based on the problems of the low speaking skill of the
twelfth grade students of SMAN 5 Surakarta. This study is intended to know
whether or not storytelling can improve students’ speaking skill. It also focuses to
know what the responses of the students are when storytelling is applied in
speaking class. The study identifies the phenomenon that takes place when
storytelling is employed in teaching and learning speaking whether students are
motivated or not.
In accordance with the study of the related topic, the writer conducts an
action research. The procedure of the research consists of identifying the
problems, planning the action, implementing the action, observing or monitoring
the action, reflecting the result of the observation, and revising the plan for the
following steps. The research is conducted in two cycles. The first cycle consists
of four meetings including the post-test and the second cycle consists of three
meetings including the final post-test. Techniques in collecting the data are
qualitative and quantitative method. In qualitative method, the writer used
observational and non-observational techniques. Observational techniques consist
of observations, field notes, and photographs, while non-observational techniques
consist of interviews and document. The results of the observation are in the form
of field notes, interviews and photographs. The result of qualitative data is
analyzed by using Constant Comparative Method (CCM). In quantitative method,
the writer used tests. The test consists of pre-test and post-test. The technique to
analyze the tests result is by comparing the mean score of pre-test and post-test. In
this action research, the writer is as the doer to implement the action
simultaneously as the observer in teaching and learning process.
The results of this research show that storytelling can effectively
improve students’ speaking skill. The improvement can be seen in the form of
students’ behaviour and students’ score. The students become more active to
speak and interact with other students in teaching and learning process. It
indicates that students are motivated to speak. The improvement of students’ score
can be seen from the differences between pre-test and post-test. The mean score of
pretest is 1.05 and it improves to 1.24 in the first post test and it also improves to
1.83 in the second post-test. From the test result, it shows that there is a significant
improvement of students’ speaking skill after the writer conducts the research. It
proves that teaching speaking through storytelling can improve students’ speaking
skill. The result of the research implies that English teachers need to choose the
appropriate technique in teaching speaking that can give students many chances to speak. The appropriate technique to teach speaking is storytelling to encourage
students to speak.
